FRIEZE MASTERS
Luce Turnier
b. 1924 Jacmel, Haiti b. 1994 Paris, France
The Luce Turnier Archive is pleased to present Luce Turnier’s work at Frieze Masters London. Curated in collaboration with Harlesden High Street Gallery and organized by Gardy St. Fleur, we present work spanning from 1949 to 1988. . Luce Turnier (b. 1924, Jacmel, Haiti d. 1994 Paris, France) was a pioneer in Haitian art. As a modernist painter, printmaker, and collage artist, she created work that would redefine modern Haitian and Caribbean art. At a time when the Western art market was fixated on primitivizing and sexualizing Haitian art, Luce confidently created work that centereddignified and authentic images of working-class Haitians. From the black ink and pencil drawings of the 1960s to the limited palette paintings of the 1980s and 1990s, her work gracefully depicted the symbolic, cultural, and material forms of Haitian life.
